Brass and Copper Cutting at MEC

At MEC, we leverage fibre laser technology to deliver precision cutting for reflective metals like brass and copper. This advancement addresses the challenges posed by the thermal conductivity and reflective properties of these metals, which were problematic with traditional CO2 lasers. The fibre laser avoids the use of mirrors, allowing for greater control over the beam’s thermal output and resulting in clean, accurate cuts without damaging the equipment.

What is Copper?

Copper, often referred to as “the red metal,” boasts exceptional electrical conductivity, making it indispensable in telecommunications and electrical applications. Its malleable nature and attractive reddish hue also lend themselves to artistic and architectural projects. Despite being weaker than many other metals—having a tensile strength that is only about half that of mild steel—copper remains durable and resistant to breakage, thanks to its malleable properties.

What is Brass?

Brass is a versatile metal alloy composed of copper and zinc. By varying the proportions of these elements, manufacturers can create brass with different mechanical properties suited for specific applications. Its bright, gold-like appearance makes it popular for decorative elements, while its low friction characteristics make it ideal for door mechanisms, gears, musical instruments, and plumbing fittings.

Brass has a lower melting point compared to many metals, which posed challenges for CO2 laser cutting. However, by adjusting the copper and zinc ratios, we can produce both hard and soft varieties of brass. Additionally, incorporating aluminum can enhance the alloy’s strength and corrosion resistance, while adding elements like iron and manganese improves wear resistance.

With our advanced Ventis fibre laser cutting system, MEC can efficiently cut copper and brass up to 10mm thick with exceptional speed and accuracy.
